/ the hearing of statements and showing of objects, etc. in a law court to judge if a person is guilty of a crime or to decide a case or a legal matter

 ex) trial proceedings
       Trial by jury is a fundamental* right
       it was a very complicated trial that went on for months
       she's going on trial for fraud*
       Ten witnesses are expected to testify at the trial today
       The judge reacted angrily to the suggestion that it hadn't been a fair trial.
 
 *fundamental: forming the base, from which everthing else develops. ex) we need to make fundamental changes to the way in which we treat our enviroment.
 *fraud: / (crime) the crime of getting money by deceiving people. ex) credit card fraud. He is fighting extradition to Hong Kong to face trial on fraud charges. / (false) someone who deceives people by saying that they are someone or something that they are not. ex) she was a psychic who was later revealed to be a fraud.

/ to flow or send out quickly and in large amounts

 ex) Oil gushed (out) from the hole in the tanker.
       Blood was gushing from his nose.

/ the fact of it not being clear in a situation what is right and wrong.

 ex) The movie presents a straightforward* choice beteween good and evill, with no shades of gray.
*straightforward: easy to understand or simple. ex) just follow the signs to Bradford - it's very straightforward.
 

black and white(idiom)

/ A black-and-white subject or situation is one in which it is easy to understand what is right and wrong.

/ shocking and morally unacceptable

 ex) THe judge criticized the "outrageous greed" of some of the bankers.
       It is outrageous that these buildings remain empty while thousands of people have no homes.
       These prices are just outrageous(=much too high)

/ used to describe something or someone that is shocking because they are unusual or strange.

 ex) outrageous clothes/behaviour
       an outrageous character
 

ruling

/ (noun)
a decision

 ex) The court has made a final ruling on the case that the companies acted illegally.
       Langdale described the court ruling as a travesty* of justice.
       The ruling sets a legal precedent.
       Many believe the ruling to be unfair. 
       The judge will make his ruling after all the evidence has been submitted.
       A ruling in favour of the defendant will be seen by some as a victory for common sense.
 
*travesty: something that fails to represent the values and qualities that it is intended to represent, in a way that is shocking of offensive. parody.

being in control of country, society, etc.; making the decisions about how a country, society, etc. is run

 ex) The Communists are the ruling party at the moment.
